Mathematics in the Senior School and Sixth Form

This year has been a unique time to teach and learn Mathematics and the use of technology has been embedded even deeper into our lessons.

Teachers have been quick to adapt to using dynamic geometry software to model complex mathematical relationships and present explanations to students in new and exciting ways.

Students have enjoyed the independence of working more autonomously but also being able to collaborate on problems in lessons with their peers by harnessing the power of Teams. Whilst a challenging year in many ways the skills our students have learned will stay with them for a long time and hopefully complement those lessons which are learned by physically being back in the classroom.  

There have been a number of notable achievements by our Mathematicians this year. Elizabeth G. qualified for the Hamilton Olympiad which is open to the top 600 qualifying students nationally. We also had thirteen Year 9 students qualify for the Kangaroo Intermediate Maths Challenge, open to only the top-performing Year 9 students nationally. 

Although separated by distance, the pandemic has demonstrated peoples’ ability to stay connected and to keep going. Through a great effort from both teachers and students alike, some degree of normality has prevailed with regards to schooling and students’ learning has continued.

Whilst a challenging year in many ways the skills our students have learned will stay with them for a long time and hopefully complement those lessons which are learned by physically being back in the classroom.
