Languages in the Junior School

Modern languages in the Junior School have continued to thrive this academic year, in school and online.

Most recently, the Year 6 girls enjoyed their language taster lessons in Mandarin, French, German, Spanish and Latin, in preparation for Senior School choices. The Mandarin and French teachers were particularly impressed by their ability and spoken confidence.
 
During this year's period of online learning, Mandarin and French lessons continued. Mrs Skillings and Madame Lea both found new and innovative ways of teaching their respective languages online. Given the emphasis on learning the spoken language in an interactive way, online learning presented a real challenge. We were incredibly impressed by the way in which the girls worked collaboratively to support each other.
 
Online learning also offered the opportunity for independent creative work; for example, Junior School Prep girls learnt about the 12 Chinese zodiac symbols and represented them in many different creative ways.

Our world shrunk during lockdown - to our homes, towns and villages - the continuation of modern language learning during lockdown meant the girls were able to expand their lockdown world and look beyond their immediate surroundings to other countries and cultures.
