From our International Co-ordinator

This year has been an exciting one for international learning, working towards accreditation for the International Schools Award.

Focusing on this Award has given us a chance to really show off all the international activities that contribute towards embedding global learning and global citizenship across St Mary’s School, Cambridge. 

Fairtrade

During Fairtrade Fortnight Year 7, Year 8 and Sixth Form students gave an informative assembly about what this topic means to them and how they learn about it in school.

Year 7 students showed us how they took Fairtrade as a basis for their learning about ‘eliminating injustice’ in Integrated Learning Week and how this was cross-curricular learning that connected with their language lessons.

Year 8 were keen to explain how they studied Fairtrade as part of their geography lessons when looking at the topic of Trade, Fairtrade and Aid. Whilst Sixth Formers, who study Fairtrade as part of their Business A Level, went on to run a stall every breaktime during Fairtrade Fortnight, raising money for charity as well as promoting awareness of Fairtrade products. 

South African connection

The Unexpected Voices Competition linked, for the first time, St Mary’s School with Jai Hind School in South Africa. This project is run by the British Council in conjunction with World Speech Day. 

St Mary’s School and Jai Hind ran an internal competition and invited students to submit a 500-word speech on the topic of climate. Both school’s winning entries were then submitted to the British Council, and although we were not successful in reaching the final it was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate some of the talented speech writers we have in our school. It was also a brilliant opportunity to collaborate on a project with a like-minded school in South Africa. We hope to do more with them in the future. 

Languages Week 

We celebrated Languages Week with a colourful and vibrant experience this year. We started the week with a Japanese taster lesson; followed swiftly over the next few days with our French patisserie, German games and goodies and language puzzles, plus the most popular activities of the week: Flamenco dancing and cooking Chinese moon cakes.
