Collaboration and exploration through sport

Sport at St Mary's always requires collaboration and exploration.

In Senior School and Sixth Form, students participate in a range of activities where the focus is not only to develop physical performance but also to look at interpersonal skills such as teamwork, cooperation and collaboration.

This year we started to explore leadership with Year 9. Students completed a unit of work looking at leadership, and worked together to organise sports activities in small groups, developing their leadership skills along the way. The activities were delivered with children in Reception Classes at the University of Cambridge Primary School.

We aim to continue this initiative next year as we cement an Applied Leadership unit into our PE curriculum for Year 9, which spans leadership, communication and collaboration skills.

Our Senior School Dance Showcase and Gymnastics Display have been real highlights this academic year. As always, students work incredibly hard to create their own routines to perform for friends and family.

In both dance and gymnastics, students explore a variety of styles and techniques, working together to create pieces of work. The outcomes performed were outstanding, and as a Department, we felt very proud of all the students involved and look forward to these events taking place next year.

During the pandemic, we were unable to mix our Senior School students with Junior School. So, this year we were thrilled that our Senior School sports scholars were able to collaborate with the Junior School, to organise and lead their Sports Day events.

This is an excellent opportunity for older students to lead others and to use their sporting knowledge and experience to encourage the younger girls.
