Art and Photography competition successes
It has been a year of outstanding achievement and competition success for our Art and Photography students in Senior School and Sixth Form.
From visions of our future workplaces, to celebrating black and minority ethnic role models through our in-school art competition - our students have excelled at national and regional levels.
Tia S. wins Khadija Saye Photography Award
Tia S. a Year 13 Photography A Level student and boarder at Mary Ward House was selected as the winner of this national photographic competition. The prestigious Khadija Saye Photography Award is awarded by the Boarding Schools’ Association. Her winning image is pictured above.
Tia said: “I am so honoured and pleased to have won such an award, particularly in light of what it stands for, in terms of Khadija’s life and creativity. It also helps highlight the joy and sense of community developing in boarding school life.”
BSA judges commented that Tia’s work: “displayed an excellent level of creative” and that she was “clearly a talented student”

Isla T. in Year 9 is runner-up in national Christmas Card Competition
Isla's design for this year's competition theme of 'Joy to the World' was selected as runner-up in the Catholic Independent Schools' annual competition.
Maureen Glackin, competition judge, commented: Her card was such an elegant and unique expression of the ‘Joy to the World’ theme and so delicately painted, it was just beautiful. What an incredibly talented young artist she is.
Design the Future Workplace Competition
Bella T. a Year 13 A Level Art and Design student secured second place in the 15-18-year-old category, in a regional competition inviting young people to design workplaces of the future.
Bella's passion for art, alongside physics and mathematics, shines through, with an entry that highlights her interest in architecture and design.
Ms Conroy (Head of Art) and Mr Griffiths (Lead of STEMM AWARD) said: “At St Mary’s we value the opportunity to highlight how subjects can work collaboratively and successfully in developing innovative concepts and ideas. No subject operates in a vacuum, we are all stronger functioning as cooperative rather than independently. Our students recognise this and place value on seeking out cross-curricular opportunities, such as this competition where we see art, technology, and engineering combine to generate concepts of how our future workplaces may look.’

Rotary Young Photographer Competition
This annual competition, promoted by Rotary Great Britain and Ireland, is led by the Cambridge Camera Club, the Cambridge Independent and Campkin's Cameras. Students achieving success in the 2021 competition were:
- Albany G., - Year 13 Art and Design A Level student, ‘Highly Commended’ (Rockpools)
- Masha I. - Year 12 Photography A Level student, ‘Commended’ (Spider)
- Madeleine H. - Year 8 Art Scholar, ‘Highly Commended’ (Rose)
- Esme L. - Year 8 ‘Commended’ (Bird)
Black History Month Portrait Competition
Black History Month saw the launch of an in-school portrait competition, which invited girls to create portraits of inspiring role models. We received a brilliant range of entries from across Senior School and Sixth Form, and eventually selected the winning entries:
