A stunning Summer Concert
The Summer Concert at the University of Cambridge’s West Road Concert Hall was simply brilliant.
Maryam G., a Music Scholar and last year’s Music Captain, who has also achieved distinction at Grade 8 in viola, violin and oboe and distinction in her singing Diploma, performed two movements of Schumann’s Marchenbilder with panache.
The Music Department will sorely miss her but we know - like other alumnae musicians - she will be back to visit us, since she will be just down the road when she embarks on reading Music at the University of Cambridge next year.
Indeed, alumna Georgina J. who graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and went on to complete a master’s degree with Distinction from the Royal Northern College of Music returned this year, to play Mozart’s double piano Sonata in D Major alongside Sonia W. our current Year 11 Music Scholar.
Both gave a dazzling performance and it was quite something to see two grand pianos nestling together like jigsaw pieces on the stage.
The variety of music at this year's Summer Concert was super: the audience greatly enjoyed songs from musicals including Serenata’s rendition of When I Grow Up from Matilda and Allegro’s rendition of Bewitched as well as the Jazz Band and the Diamond Geezers accompaniment of Minnie S. singing Why Don’t You Do Right - which was utterly beguilingly.
